Why Hong Kong Holds a Special Place in My Heart

Hong Kong has always had a special place in my heart—it’s where my mother was born, and through her stories and my own visits, I’ve come to deeply appreciate its rich culture and incredible food. I’ve been lucky enough to visit multiple times, and each trip feels like a return to something familiar yet constantly evolving.

One of the things I always look forward to most is the food. Hong Kong is a true culinary powerhouse, shaped by a unique blend of Chinese, British, and Portuguese influences. Once a British colony and a historic trading hub for Portuguese merchants, Hong Kong has developed a vibrant, multicultural identity that’s reflected in every bite.

At the heart of Hong Kong’s food culture is Cantonese cuisine—known for its emphasis on fresh ingredients and delicate, precise cooking techniques. Dim sum is perhaps the most iconic expression of this, with dishes like har gow (shrimp dumplings) and siu mai (pork dumplings) served in bamboo baskets across the city’s bustling teahouses.

British influence introduced items like milk tea—famously adapted into the smooth and strong “Stocking Milk Tea”—and pastries like egg tarts. Meanwhile, the Portuguese, with their early presence in nearby Macau, helped shape what’s now known as Macanese cuisine, a unique fusion of Chinese and European flavors.

Some must-try dishes in Hong Kong include:

Cantonese roast meats (siu mei) – especially Char Siu (BBQ pork) and Roast Goose

Claypot rice – warm, smoky, and comforting

Wonton noodles – light yet flavorful, often served in a clear broth

Street food favorites – such as curry fish balls, egg waffles, and Hong Kong-style egg tarts

Sweet treats – like pineapple buns (bo lo bao) and mango pomelo sago pudding

On a personal note, my all-time favorite dish in Hong Kong is roast goose. I always make a point to visit Kam’s Roast Goose, a Michelin-starred restaurant on Hong Kong Island. I usually go two or three times per trip—it’s that good! I also never skip a bowl of classic wonton noodles, and stopping by a local bakery for a warm, flaky egg tart is always a highlight.

If you ever get the chance to visit Hong Kong, I hope you experience the same sense of connection and wonder that I do each time I return. It’s a city full of energy, history, and unforgettable food. Trust me—your taste buds will thank you.
