Autumn 🍂 Autumn greetings, everyone!
It seems like just yesterday we were speaking about the Spring and Summer festivities. We have seen a sudden plummet in the evening temperature since the Autumn Equinox (秋分), which I think is great news! Autumn is my favourite season in Japan, because it’s not too hot and it’s not too cold. Last year, I went to Arashiyama for some maple leaf viewing (紅葉狩り). The vibrant colours and scenic landscapes are definitely worth the visit to Kyoto. Sweet potatoes are also in season, I really enjoy the sweet potato crepes from Family Mart and some local bakeries too. If you happen to have any autumnal specialties, please let us know!

One of my favorite things to do is go hiking in the mountains! I have had the pleasure of hiking in some beautiful places across the world. I have hiked in America, Hawaii, and in parts of Japan. One of my favorite places I have hiked is on the beautiful dormant volcanic mountain of Maui, Hawaii. The mountain is called Haleakala and has now been made a National Park. It is a beautiful and otherworldly landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. I hiked down into the crater of the old volcano and camped for two nights. I was able to see more stars than I ever had before!
There were three things that stood out to me the most on that adventure. One was the colors! There were wonderful earthy shades of red, brown, green, purple, black, and many more! The second was the silence. It was so quiet in the National Park that the only sounds I heard were my footsteps crunching in the volcanic sand and the occasional Hawaiian Goose flying overhead. It was very peaceful. The last thing that stood out to me was the Silver Sword plant. It is a unique plant that is only found in Haleakala National Park. You cannot find this plant anywhere else in the world! That is so cool!
There are so many more places that I want to go hiking camping in the world. Especially in Japan! I would love to hear your recommendations for places to visit in Japan. Right now, I have my sights set on climbing some of Japans 100 famous mountains. I will start this endeavor early next year. So please, the next time you see me at your local Nova branch, let’s have a conversation about the beauties and wonders of Japan’s world-famous nature spots!
