Off the beaten path with Robbie Larrabee
I am very fond of traveling to the less touristy places in Japan. Places that offer a feeling of peace and quiet. Places that are filled with an air of mystery. The time-worn places of ancient Japan that evoke a sense of history. Sometimes, for me, this is a simple walk in the mountains or along the water’s edge of the old mother lake, Lake Biwa. Other times I find it in the older parts of the city of Kyoto.
One of my favorite places to go is Otagi nenbutsu-ji temple in Arashiyama. It has hundreds of moss-covered Jizo statues and is nestled in a quiet mountain setting that is far away from the crowded paths of the bamboo forests that are more widely known.
