Did you know that today (February 22nd) is CAT DAY? Why?
Because of a cat’s voice “nyan nyan nyan (2/22)”
Here are some well-known and popular cat idioms!
- Let the cat out of the bag – this means to reveal a secret. – “I wasn’t going to tell anyone that I was getting married, but my friend Pete let the cat out of the bag”
- A fat cat – a fat cat is anyone who is rich and powerful. It usually has a negative meaning. – “The government only cares about the fat cats”.
- Put the cat among the pigeons* – this means to do or say something that will make people angry or worried. – “When the president told us we had to finish the project in just one week he really put the cat among the pigeons”
- There’s more than one way to skin a cat – this means there is more than one way to achieve something. Don’t think about the original meaning too much!
- A copycat – this means someone or something that copies, imitates or follows others. “The police think that this wasn’t the same murderer – it was a copycat killer”.
- A cat nap – to have a short sleep or siesta*.
It seems that a lot of cat expressions have a bad image of cats… Maybe English speakers prefer dogs…
pigeons = 羽鳥
siesta = 昼寝 (it’s a Spanish word, but used in English)
