It’s week two of the 2026 Winter Olympics, and there are high profile events and medal finals coming fast and furious. Whether you’re finally getting into the Games or are just starting to watch, here are three more suggestions to help maximize their potential to improve your English skills and to be part of the excitement.

The time difference between Japan and Italy can be tough for viewers, but social media and streaming are here to help you catch up and still keep your regular schedule.

4.  Giving Fashion and Face

Olympic athletes are NOT like us! They are at the peak of physical fitness and have glam squads to get them podium and media ready.  How do they rule the snow and ice and then show up on the podium with perfectly styled hair and gleaming smiles???

The Olympics are a global catwalk!  2026 being held in Milan, an iconic centre of fashion,  adds to the atmosphere of a runway show.  The opening and closing ceremonies are a showcase of designers and cultural style from every team.  Watch the ceremonies, focus on some countries beyond Japan, and take some notes on what uniforms catch your attention. Then, do a bit of research to learn more. Every colour choice and detail has been carefully selected to reflect and celebrate a country’s traditional and modern culture.  Uniforms reflect what a country values, so studying them will help you understand the society more deeply and expand your vocabulary.

5. It Takes an Olympic Village

Mainstream media focuses primarily on wins and medals and feel good stories.  That’s what many viewers want.  If you’re looking for a deeper look at the Olympics, and a deeper conversation about the event itself, it’s time to go into research mode.

Find out which athletes are making their Olympic debut, or which athletes are competing in their final Games. Dig into their career details and the team of dedicated people supporting them.  No athlete can possibly get to the Olympics alone.  Family, trainers, coaches, mentors, teammates, and support staff — they’ve all played a huge part in the Olympic dream.   The Olympic and Paralympic Games are massive events and take thousands of PEOPLE to stage. It’s not just about the budgets.

6.  Everybody (ice) Dance Now

Figure skating is extremely popular in Japan already, but interest peaks during the Winter Games. Scoring and judging can be complicated and controversial for even knowledgeable fans to understand.  An easier way into the conversation is through music— scores include artistic interpretation and creativity.  In 2026 some figure skating events were required to select pieces of music from the 1990s, and each skater’s or pair’s choice of music and costumes were carefully selected to fit this pop culture theme. Choose a favourite skater or pair and take a closer look at their music and costumes. This is a fun way to learn about the sport and the athletes’ interests and personalities on and off the ice. Music is key to appealing to a younger audience who listen to and watch events on  many different platforms.

Enjoy the last stretch of the Olympics, and get ready for the Paralympic Games!   These suggestions help you get involved in the conversation about the events beyond just sports and basic information.
