Sushi: A Tale

 

“What is this?” I asked my friend. “It looks like fish.”

“It is fish,” he said. “The Japanese call it sushi.”

I looked at the piece of fish sitting on my plate and gagged. “Is it cooked?”

“No, it’s raw. Try it with soy sauce.” He picked up the piece of sushi with his chopsticks and dipped the fish in the black liquid.

“Raw fish! How can you eat that?” I pushed the plate away in disgust.

“You’ll never know how good it is unless you try it.” He picked another plate off the conveyer belt. 

“What’s that one?” I pointed at it with a shaky finger.

“Squid. Try it. It’s really chewy.” He poured soy sauce on top of it and shoved it in his mouth.

I stuck my tongue out. “No way!”

My friend crossed his arms. “We’re not leaving here until you try at least one.” He picked a red looking one off the conveyer belt and placed it in front of me. “This one is salmon. It’s really easy to eat.”

I stared at the fish, expecting it to stare back at me. Closing my eyes, I picked it up with my chopsticks and put it in my mouth. 

The flavor exploded. It was like a spicy heaven. The wasabi complemented the saltiness of the soy sauce and made the fish melt in my mouth. 

My friend had a smug look on his face.

“Do they all taste like that?” I asked in wonder.

“Some are better,” he said, pulling another plate from the belt. “Try this one.”

That’s how I learned to love sushi.
