Hi everyone,
Spring will soon be here and with it the blooming of the cherry blossoms and millions of tourists clogging up the sightseeing spots. Overtourism has become a big problem in Japan and it’s become my mission to find some quieter, more obscure places to get my sakura hit this year. For example, I live in Nakano, along Nakano Dori, but over the past few years it’s become renowned as a great spot to photograph the yellow Seibu Line trains as they pass through the crossing framed by the pinkish white sakura trees. Nowadays there’s always a crowd huddled on the footbridge, cameras ready, waiting for the moment they can get that Instagram worthy shot. There are thousands of these photos on social media and it’s become a bit overdone and cliché. Luckily for me, I found a spot a bit further down the tracks so I can get my own take of the shot of the sakura and yellow train without having to deal with a horde of photographers.
The same can be said for many other places in Tokyo. While the sakura is always beautiful the crowds can be overwhelming. There is a great delight in finding, or better yet being shown by a local, a place that is beautiful but tranquil, picturesque but not well known, a hidden jewel amongst all the regular tourist traps. Maybe a good example of this is Tetsugakodou Park, my local park. Ironically, it’s only a stone’s throw from the aforementioned footbridge but most people don’t wander down that way. It’s a great place to just chill out and admire the cherry blossoms in the park or along the river and I feel it’s way down the list of the places to visit in Tokyo so crowds are not a problem.

春が間もなく訪れ、桜が咲き誇る頃には、数百万の観光客が観光地を埋め尽くします。オーバーツーリズムは日本で深刻な問題となっており、今年はより静かで人里離れた場所で桜を楽しむことが私の使命になりました。例えば、私は中野通り沿いの中野に住んでいますが、ここ数年のうちに、ピンクがかった白の桜の木々に囲まれた踏切を黄色い西武線の電車が通過する様子を撮影する絶好のスポットとして有名になりました。今では歩道橋に群がる人々がカメラを構え、インスタ映えする瞬間を待ち構えている光景が日常です。SNSにはこの写真が何千枚も投稿され、少々やりすぎで陳腐な光景になってしまいました。幸い、私は線路を少し下った場所に新たなスポットを発見。大勢のカメラマンに囲まれることなく、桜と黄色い電車を私なりの視点で撮影できるのです。
東京の他の多くの場所にも同じことが言えます。桜はいつだって美しいですが、人混みは圧倒されるほどです。地元の人に教えてもらうか、自分で見つけるかして、美しくも静かで、絵のように美しいのにあまり知られていない場所、つまり定番の観光地の中に隠れた宝石のような場所を見つける喜びは格別です。その良い例が、私の地元の公園である哲学堂公園かもしれません。皮肉なことに、先述の歩道橋からほんのすぐ近くにあるのに、ほとんどの人はそこまで足を延ばしません。公園内や川沿いで桜を眺めながらただくつろぐのに最適な場所で、東京の観光スポットリストではかなり下位に位置するため、人混みは問題になららないいのです。
