Holiday Cards
With the holidays fast approaching, rotating postal strikes in Canada, and the government shutdown dragging on in the USA, the stress and guilt associated with sending holiday cards is increasing for many people in Japan and overseas.
Luckily, we have technology to help us out if we wish to continue the tradition and custom of sending seasonal cards. Electronic cards and text message greetings are popular options in many countries, and there are endless ways to personalize your messages for a wide range of events and festivities.
Students no longer have to worry about what to say in a message in another language, since translation tools are standard on most smartphones. Messaging apps have amusing character stickers for all occasions in multiple languages, and the internet offers AI suggestions for what to write if you need a quick response.
When I came to Japan 20 years ago, there were few alternatives to sending paper cards, and information about card customs in other places was much more difficult to find. I was often asked about the rules and customs for cards, and I sometimes wrote English messages on cards for students to send to overseas friends. Many students reported having to send hundreds of cards to their personal and work contacts. Some people loved making cards from photos of family members and pets, but others felt it was another boring chore in an already stuffed holiday schedule.
I love to choose and send handwritten cards and postcards, and I treasure the cards I have received over the years. I also have an album of interesting stamps. I grew up in a place where holiday cards were proudly displayed in homes and favourite cards were tucked away as keepsakes for years. I have tried to keep up with sending cards, but busy schedules, rising prices, and postal service interruptions make it increasingly difficult.
For some people, electronic communication is making cards seem like relics of the past, but I think the time and effort they require speaks to the value of relationships – which we will always have a need for!
