Halloween has always felt like a magical and mysterious time of year, but it became especially meaningful to me while living in Ireland. Many people don’t realize that Halloween actually has deep roots in ancient Irish tradition. It originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain, a time when people believed the boundary between the world of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st, it was said that spirits could return to walk among the living. To protect themselves, people lit bonfires and wore frightening masks or costumes to scare off evil spirits. That’s where the modern Halloween tradition of dressing up comes from!
What I found fascinating is how similar this is to Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico, which is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Though the style and tone of the holiday are different, the heart of both celebrations is the same: they both honor the return of the dead. In Mexico, families create colorful altars decorated with candles, flowers, food, and photos to welcome back the spirits of their loved ones. Instead of fearing the dead, Día de los Muertos embraces them with love and remembrance. Like Halloween, there are also costumes, face painting, and even skull imagery—but it’s all done in a celebratory way.
One of the most touching portrayals of Día de los Muertos is in the Disney/Pixar film Coco (titled Remember Me in Japan). It’s a beautiful and emotional movie that captures the importance of family, memory, and honoring those who came before us. The music, the visuals, and the story all come together to show how powerful these traditions can be—not just as cultural celebrations, but as deeply human experiences of love and connection across generations.
Watching Coco made me appreciate how universal these traditions really are. Even though they come from different cultures, both Halloween and Día de los Muertos remind us that the past is never far from the present, and that those we’ve lost live on through memory and ritual.
