今回は、英語講師のDanielが、母国オーストラリアの
学校制度について書いてくれました!
日本との違いに注目です👀

Schooling in Australia

Schooling in Australia has several key differences with Japan. One of these being that Australia does not have Junior High School. Classes are instead separated into Primary School and High School. Primary School covers from Kinder to 6th Grade, around ages 5-12. While High School covers from 7th to 12th Grade, ages 13-18. One similarity to Japan (and difference to America) is that almost all Australian school children must wear uniforms.

The majority of Australian schools are Public Schools, which are funded by the govemment and generally cost very little. Catholic schools represent another sizable segment, with these schools being largely funded by the Catholic Church and subsidized by the Australian govemment. Catholic schools are a popular option for middle class families, as they represent a lower-cost option for a private education. There also exist other forms of private schooling which are generally made up of high-cost elite schools, or alternative education such as performing arts schools.

Australian schoolchildren have the option to purchase meals from the school, which we call ‘tuckshops”. These tuckshops are usually staffed by parents on a rotating volunteer basis. While it is a popular option for snacks, purchasing meals at school is less common than it is in Japan and the US, with most parents opting to send their kids to school with a packed lunch. Many schools in Australia also lack a cafeteria, with children eating their lunches in vanous outside areas of the school. Most schools have a short break earty in the day, constituting recess. Followed by a longer lunch break later in the day. It is very common for children to play games and be physically active in these periods. As a child, I always looked forward to playing socor every day at lunchtime.

The school year in Australia is generally split into four semesters, or “terms”. As seasons are the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, we do not have a long summer vacation in the middle of the year. Our longest break is during the Christmas period, which is summer in Australia. This typically begins one week before Christmas, and ends six weeks later at the beginning of February. We also have two weeks off around the Easter period, then another two weeks vacation in both July and October.

While Australian schools do have clubs based on athletics, music, and other pursuits, participation appears to be far less common in Australia. Most extracurricular activity is done outside of the school, with kids playing sports for their local area on weekends. Another key difference between schools in Australia and Japan is that Australian schoolchildren have no obligation to help clean the school, with this work being undertaken by janitors.
