Coming from a long line of cat baddies, I’ve had
three cats over the past forty years in America,
plus sixty-some-odd cats in Hiroshima.
My first cat, a Russian Blue named Knitt was adopted in 1988.
She was later followed by a brown tabby named Capone,
who lived one day shy of 20 years, named Capone.
After her passing in 2012, my third cat, Cheddar,
an orange tabby and my first male cat, came to live with me.
When I relocated to Hiroshima, Cheddar―fearing the outside world
stayed behind in Washinton, D.C., to watch over a senior parent.
As I cannot have pets in my apartment, I currently volunteer at a
local cat cafe and rescue in Minami Hiroshima.
I’m responsible for social media marketing aimed at foreign
visitors to Hiroshima, training staff and volunteers in English
on how to communicate with Western guests, and occasionally
attempting to teach Japanese cats to understand
English―with the expected, obvious results.
My two favorite cats at the rescue are a brother-sister pair of
Bengals whom I’ve affectionately given English names:
Bonk, because she likes to head-butt me; and her brother,
Weird Ed, aptly named for his single large lower fang
and long, pointed head.
