I didn’t realize how important peanut butter was to my family until I moved to Japan.
Be careful, I’m not referring to the common substitute for peanut-based spread in Japan: peanut cream. No, peanut butter is very different from peanut cream. Peanut cream is light and very sweet, and emotionally devastating to an American craving a good PB&J. Peanut butter, however, is a thick, salty spread with seemingly-endless uses. Today, I’d like to talk about those uses so that you can try some for yourself.
Yes, you can get peanut butter in Japan. It can be more difficult to find than other grocery items, but there is usually one tiny part of a shelf space reserved for Skippy-brand, genuine peanut butter. It’s also usually a very small container, around 340 grams, and also usually close to a thousand yen for one tiny container. It’s also devastating to an American who is used to buying 40 ounces of peanut butter (or 1134 grams) for around the same price. Why do we need so much peanut butter, you ask? There are plenty of reasons, but I’ll start with the most classic example: the PB&J.
