Four Things I Love About Omiya
I had the pleasure of moving to Omiya back in November of 2024. Before moving, I had never heard of Omiya. I did not even know where Saitama was located. In the eight months since, I have grown to love my new home. There is so much to appreciate about this city, and I feel that I find more excitement every time I leave the house. These are some of my favorite things about living in Omiya….
1. Location. Not only is Omiya a great city itself, it is also very conveniently located to other wonderful places in Japan. I frequently take the train to Tokyo to explore the vast Kano region. Within 45 minutes, I can be in fascinating neighborhoods like Ueno, Shinjuku, or Koenji. As a baseball fan, I love that Tokyo Dome, Meiji Jingu, and the Belluna Dome are just a short ride away. If I ride the train just a little longer, I can explore Chinatown and Minato Mirai in Yokohama. Just last week, I took a day trip to Utsunomiya and Nikko, easily accessible via the Utsunomiya Line. Should I wish to explore further afield, I can catch the Shinkansen from Omiya Station and enjoy cities as varied as Osaka or Fukushima.
2. Restaurants and Bars. Omiya is blessed with a thriving food and drink scene. I can sample a wide variety of cuisine, from native Japanese food to Italian, Chinese, Nepalese, or the comfort of a western-style cheeseburger. Perhaps my greatest love in Japan is ramen. Since finding my favorite ramen shop several months ago, I have been known to eat there as many as four times in a week. If I am not in the mood for a full meal, Omiya is loaded with supermarkets and convenience stores for a quick snack. Omiya also boasts an exciting nightlife, with countless bars and izakaya to enjoy long into the night. The East Side of Omiya Station is a particularly entertaining hotspot, with hundreds of revellers enjoying drinks and lively conversation. As a night owl, I appreciate that I can enjoy a cocktail over a delicious meal well after midnight. In my native Australia, it can be rather difficult to find food in the late hours.
3. Omiya Park. The city of Omiya is a bustling metropolis dominated by concrete, steel, and glass, but Omiya Park provides a beautiful respite from the stress of a city. This large park contains a stunning lake, the historic Hikawa Shrine, beautiful trees, as well as a free zoo. The park is best enjoyed in the springtime, where one can take in the iconic cherry blossoms and enjoy a traditional hanami. The large lake contains many gorgeous koi fish, who swim to the surface, begging to be fed. Foodies will appreciate the wide variety of local delicacies available from the many market stalls within the park.
4. Harmony of Excitement and Peace. One of my favorite aspects of Omiya is that it feels like just the right size for me. The area surrounding Omiya Station feels as busy as one would expect from a neighborhood in Tokyo, teeming with bars, restaurants, shops, and entertainment. However, one needs only to walk five to ten minutes in any direction to obtain some peace of mind. The streets are wide and spacious, as well as incredibly quiet. The residential areas are overwhelmingly safe and family-friendly. One can easily obtain all of their essential needs from the numerous local supermarkets, without feeling suffocated by the chaos of a huge city.
