Recently I went with two friends to cycle along the Shimanami Kaido. This is a cycling road which starts in Onomichi and finishes in Imabari. The route goes through 6 islands: Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikujichima, Omishima, Hakatijima and Oshima The road is roughly 70 kilometres long but if you want to do some sightseeing on the islands this adds some distance to the trip. We decided to do the trip across 2 days as we wanted to spend some time exploring the islands and we didn’t want to be in too much of a rush. In hindsight I actually think 3 days would have been a good amount as there is lots to do on the islands.

We began the trip by flying to Hiroshima and then taking a bus to the start point in Onomichi. I had heard from some students that I should try Onomichi ramen so the night before we started the cycle we enjoyed some ramen and some beers. The next morning we started the cycle at around 11am. We had originally planned to start at 9am but my friends were being very lazy and it took us a while to get ready. We had made the decision to use road bikes instead of e-bikes as we wanted a challenge. However, we were a bit intimidated when we began the cycle and we noticed that everyone else was using e-bikes! In Mukaishima we took a small detour from the route to visit a beautiful shrine. Unfortunately, and not for the last time, we got a bit lost trying to find our way back to the cycling route. Luckily, just as we were about to cycle in the completely wrong direction, a local shopkeeper gave us some directions and we were able to reconnect with the route. The route took us down to the seaside and we were able to get a beautiful view.
