Hello all(^^) I’m Daniel! Today I want to talk about mythology and the language that comes from it.
The names of our planets, such as Jupiter and Mars, come from the gods of Roman mythology. In Roman mythology, Jupiter is the leader of the gods, but is named Zeus in Greek mythology.🪐
There are many other planets named after gods, such as Mars, the god of war, Venus, the god of love, Neptune, the gods of the sea, Mercury the god of money and wealth, and more.
We can use characters from myth to describe certain tasks. Hercules was a hero famous for his strength and grand adventures. The word ‘herculean’ can describe a task that requires great strength and effort.
Another character, Sisyphus, was punished by being forced to roll a boulder up a mountain, where, close to the top, the boulder would roll all the way to the bottom. We can call a task ‘sisyphean’ if it is a task that is impossible to complete.
Mythology is amazing and interesting. Knowledge of it helps improve your understanding of English literature and further improves your knowledge of the langauge. The names of Greek gods, such as Thor and Zeus, are very common in English media.
