Animals and Bug Love

Growing up, I’ve always been a bit of a weird kid compared to others. One thing that set me apart was my fascination with animals and bugs. I was always interested in catching reptiles, and insects. My mother always hated when I brought them home.
In school, from elementary through sixth grade, we had something called “Show and Tell.” The kids would bring something of interest or value to them, show it to the class, and talk about it. Two of my favorite memories from that time involve animals and bugs I had found.
The first one was in fourth grade. Near my grandmother’s house, there was a small creek that I knew had tons of frogs. I went there often and tried to see how many I could catch. One day, I decided that would be the day to show off my frog catching skills. I grabbed a small fish tank, ran down to the creek, and caught what felt like a full tank of frogs. At the time, I thought I had filled the whole tank, but looking back, it was probably only 20–25 small frogs. I took them to school and showed them to the class most of the boys were amazed, and some of the girls were disgusted. Unfortunately, I accidentally dropped the tank, and all the frogs spilled out in the classroom. It was a mess! I did get to show off my catching skills again while chasing them, but after that, animals were banned from school.
The second time was in sixth grade. I was out in the woods and found a Hercules beetle, which seemed huge to me at the time. I brought it to school, and luckily, nothing like last time happened. I just showed it off and released it afterward.
Even now, I still enjoy observing and finding animals. I tend to come across a lot of interesting bugs like spiders (my favorite), dragonflies, and even mice and birds around Aomori. Whenever I go out walking, I’m always on the lookout for insects and animals.
