とても長いブログを書いてくれたので、ぜひ頑張って読んでみてくださいね!

For as long as I can remember I have been an Arsenal fan. My family home in London is so near to the Arsenal stadium that I can hear the crowd cheering from my bedroom whenever Arsenal scored a goal. One of my first memories from childhood is going to my first football game with my dad and my brother. I remember the walk to the stadium and seeing the sea of red football shirts as we approached the stadium and the chants from the fans. In the UK most football teams have lots of different songs, called chants, that the crowd sing during games. This is done to support the team and the aim is to be louder than the fans of the opposition team. I had spent the previous week learning as many chants as I could so that I would be able join in with the rest of the fans! Before the game me and my brother were so nervous that we couldn’t sit still. Luckily, Arsenal won 5-0, and it was truly a great day!

From this point, I fell in love with football. Since then I have been regularly going to Arsenal games for almost 20 years and I still get extremely nervous before games. Growing up in London, most of the other children at school were also football fans. So, I spent most of my free time watching and playing football. Because there are lots of football teams in London, people mostly support the closest team to their home. This meant that there were lots of small rivalries among my classmates about which team you supported. For example, if Arsenal lost their match on the weekend, I knew that would be teased by my classmates on Monday. This meant that a loss could ruin my week but a win would put a smile on my face for days.

Nowadays, although I no longer have classmates teasing me, a bad Arsenal result will still put me in a bad mood and a good result will still get me smiling to myself for a few days. Although I now have a few more hobbies, I still spend lots of my free time watching and playing football. For me, football is a universal language. If I am meeting another football fan for the first time, I can talk to them for hours! It is a great way to make friends! For example, one of the first things I did when I moved to Japan was find a football team that I could play for in my free time.

One of the biggest things I miss about England is going to Arsenal games with my dad and brother. While I still watch every match on TV in Japan, I do miss the feeling of being in the stadium surrounded by other fans. During games I usually receive texts from my friends who are either celebrating or complaining about the team’s performance. Due to the time difference between England and Japan it is sometimes hard to find the time to speak with my English friends so this in a nice way to talk to them. Most recently, Arsenal had an extremely important game against Real Madrid, the biggest team in Europe! The match started at 8pm UK time which meant that I had to get up at 4am to watch the game. However, because I was so nervous and excited I didn’t feel tired at all while I was watching it. Before the game, most people expected Real Madrid to win, however, Arsenal ended up winning the game 3-0! Many English newspapers said it was the best game in the last 20 years! I received lots of messages from my friends and family after the game, which made me realize why I really love football. It’s because it brings people together, even if you are in different parts of the world.
