This Golden Week, I was lucky enough to be off during a very special weekend. Special for Star Wars fans, at least.
The first Star Wars film marks its 50th Anniversary in 2027, and the hype and force are strong in anticipation. I grew up with Star Wars, and I don’t need to explain its appeal — it’s one of the most beloved and groundbreaking 20th century cultural properties in the galaxy! Its stories, music, and merchandise formed part of the background of my pop culture-loving childhood and young adulthood. Sadly, my little western Canadian hometown was like another remote planet. Not even Toronto, the largest city in Canada, has ever hosted the ultimate fan event, Star Wars Celebration. So, I looked at the sky and dreamed about getting out.
The stars finally aligned for me in April and May of 2025. For only the second time since it began, Star Wars Celebration was held in Japan, and fifty specially selected theatres across Japan hosted all day screenings of the nine original films.
I was able to attend both of these events and fulfill my destiny! I saw posters, pins, T shirts and books celebrating the Star Wars saga in more than 25 languages, and I could meet fellow fans from around the world. English language skills can really help people engage with and enjoy fan events and films. Star Wars Celebration 2027 will be in LA, so start planning your trip at light speed!
