Hi everyone, this is Lindsay from Nova!

I’m from sunny California, also known as the Golden State, and I’d like to talk to you about some travel destinations! Many people think of places like Los Angeles and surrounding beaches in California, especially if they fly into LAX, or Los Angeles Airport. But when you think of California, don’t you also think of San Francisco?

As someone who used to live in San Francisco, I’d like to recommend my favorite places to explore in this small, but exciting city. I won’t tell you about the famous places like Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, or the Golden Gate Bridge (but I’ll recommend them nonetheless!) Instead I’ll start with the area where I used to live, known as the Sunset District. Connected to the district is the Golden Gate Park, sharing a name with the famous Golden Gate Bridge but not visited nearly enough! Inside is a wealth of fun activities to do and amazing places to explore. The park itself is even larger than New York’s Central Park, and has fun places to visit such as the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the de Young Museum, and my personal favorite, the California Academy of Science.

A little bit south of the park in Sunset proper, there is Lincoln Way, bordering the park, and Irving Street one block further. Exploring these two streets has some amazing restaurants and stores, with a much more ‘local’ feeling. From themed bakeries to deep dish pizzas, Mediterranean to classic American cuisine, you’ll find a wide variety of places to try and things to buy. I’ll recommend my absolute favorite here along Irving Street, a little cafe called Peasant Pies. Selling both savory and sweet pies in a small, handheld form, it’s impossible to not find something to love!

Traveling further south from the area along Highway 1, there’s one last stop I want to talk about. Connecting multiple rail lines and buses to the BART (major city train/subway) is a shopping area known as West Portal. If you love shopping, or haven’t had enough of the local food, it’s a must-see! Another local area, this place has a wide range of cuisine from Mexican meals to Irish pubs, while also boasting a number of vintage stores, book shops, salons, even produce stores! It’s a bustling connection place as well, so afterward, you can go straight to downtown for all the more famous places like Ghirardelli Square (for chocolate lovers) or Pier 39 (for even more shopping!!) Make sure to ride a historic cable car towards these fun places, and don’t forget other places like the MoMA (Museum of Modern Arts) or the Painted Ladies.

There’s too much to do in San Francisco, isn’t there? Even while living there, I had to accept I couldn’t do everything. But hopefully there are plenty of ideas here to plan a trip that’s not just full of exciting places to see, but also nice spots to relax. Take a walk in the quieter Botanical Garden, enjoy a handheld pie. Pick up some crafts by local artists, or shop at local bookstores to practice your English. And if you need a refresher in English to make the most of your trip, remember that our classes are open!

I hope to see you soon!
