Hi, I’m Kenneth. While we’re entering the rainy season here in Japan soon, in California, there is no rainy season. Mostly it rains in winter, meaning spring is actually when things start to dry out and we see the sun more. Of course, it’s blazing hot in the summer, but right around now in May, it’s still nice enough for plenty of outdoor activities. Hiking is a popular activity in California, thanks to the beautiful nature and spacious parks. While you may think of California as the land of beach and oceans, it’s also home to huge forests, wide valleys and a towering range of mountains – the Seirra Nevadas. Places like Big Sur, Big Basin State Park and Yosemite National Park are popular for camping and hiking starting from this time in late spring and lasting into the fall.
One of the most outstanding features of these wild areas are the towering Redwood and Sequoia trees. Redwoods are the world’s tallest trees, easily reaching over 90 meters tall, with the tallest measuring over 115 meters. Sequoias are not quite as tall, but have huge trunks, many measuring over 10 meters wide, or 30 meters around. In some cases, roads have carved tunnels through the trees rather than go around them. Seeing them is like seeing something out of a fantasy world – to the point they’ve been featured in movies. If you’ve ever seen Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, then you’ve seen a Redwood forest. The giant, alien forest in the movie wasn’t special effects – those were all real trees! It turns out you don’t have to leave the planet to see some amazing scenery.
