Recently I went on a one-day trip to Nagoya. It was my first time there. I took the local train from Kusatsu and traveled to Nagoya Station via Maibara and Ogaki. The journey took about two hours and fifteen minutes to get there.
When I arrived at Nagoya station, I was immediately surprised by how big (and how busy) that the station was. I knew that Nagoya is the 3rd largest city in Japan but I still found it surprising how crowded the station was.
After finding my bearings, I set off in the direction of Nagoya castle. I walked for around 20 minutes, through the business district of Nagoya, before finally reaching my first destination, Nagoya Castle! The castle was magnificent and the castle grounds were much bigger than I expected. I got there pretty early as well so I did not have to battle too many people in the crowds. (There were only a few tour busses on Thursday morning.) After strolling around the grounds and perusing the gift shops for some souvenirs, I made my way back across the city towards the Osu district.
I was fascinated with the Osu district! I had originally intended to visit the science museum as well but I was having so much fun aimlessly wandering the streets of Osu that I decided to forego my attempt at visiting the science museum. I walked around this district for around three and a half hours, allowing myself to get lost in the back alleys taking pictures of the various second hand shops that permeate the district.
In Osu, I also tried three Nagoya staple foods. First, I found a nice little restaurant serving traditional Kishimen. I thought the texture of the flat noodles were interesting and the flavor was reminiscent of Udon. Next, I tried Miso Katsu skewers! They were fantastic! The deep umami flavor of the miso complimented the rich oiliness of the fried pork katsu. Lastly, I tried Nagoya’s famous Tebasaki chicken wings! They were downright divine! The wings I tried came in a variety of flavors but the Nagoya classic spice was my favorite.
Nagoya was a spectacular time and I will definitely go back again sometime soon!
