It’s finally autumn and the weather has started changing in Hyogo, which means I’ve survived my first summer in Japan! As happy as I am to be here, this time of year makes me very nostalgic for home.
In the UK, autumn means the start of the school year. Shops are full of notebooks and school uniforms, students get ready to meet new classmates. Those going to university have had their exam results and are preparing to move to a different city and live away from home for the first time.
As September progresses, the wind picks up and the roads get covered in yellow leaves. Rain never really stops in Yorkshire where I live, but it feels different in autumn. Early mornings are cold and misty and the days short. When the clocks change in October, the sun comes up after 7am and goes down at 4pm.
October is, of course, Halloween month and if you’re lucky to live in a spooky city like York, then all the shop windows will be full of ghosts, cobwebs and pumpkins. Everything tastes of pumpkin spice and bonfire toffee! Did you know that York is one of the most haunted cities in the world? There have been over 500 ghost sightings! After dark, tour guides take visitors on ghost walks.
Then comes the 5th of November: Guy Fawkes night. It’s a night of fireworks and big bonfires outside the city. Do you know who Guy Fawkes was? Did you know he was born in York?
