The weather is finally taking a turn towards spring, and I start thinking about getting outside more, rather than cocooning at home. Are you familiar with the idea of cocooning? Coined in the early 1980s, it is used to describe the act of staying inside one’s home, insulated from perceived danger, instead of going out. With increasing worries of crime, rude waiters, commuting stress etc, people more and more have created snug, cozy “shells of safety” around themselves, wrapping up in down comforters while binge streaming in lounge chairs with headphones to keep the modern world out. Increases in gourmet frozen foods and “mom foods” – foods that remind people of their childhoods have grown along with this cocooning trend. Back in my hometown of Winnipeg, with winters reaching temperatures as low as -40 Celcius, The Cocooning trend can be very popular. Do you find the need to take a “staycation” and cocoon yourself at home? What fills your day, bingewatching your favorite drama? What’s your favorite “mom food”?
Now that the weather is warming up, the urge to hit the hiking trails is growing in me again, and I hope to continue trying new mountain trails. Winnipeg is in the center of the prairies, no mountains for thousands of kilometers. In Canada spring meant more time on a bike, getting out of the city and into nature. Canada has the multi purpose Trans Canada Trail, from Cape Spear, Newfoundland to Victoria, Bc, as well as to Tuktoyaktuk, North West Territories, with over 24,000 km of rideable trails. Do you have a favorite cycling trail near you here in Japan? How about your recommendation for a mountain hiking trail?
