Happy New Year everyone!
I hope everyone has had a wonderful 2022 and is looking forward to the year ahead. New Year’s is a very important time in Japan, and I have enjoyed experiencing the unique Japanese traditions and festivities that occur during this special time.
In the United States, New Year’s celebrations are likely quite different than what you are used to in Japan. People begin to celebrate the New Year on December 31st, New Year’s Eve. It is common to celebrate with songs, games, and fireworks. Celebrations last late into the night of the 31st.
During this time, family and friends gather together to share a meal and drink to “ring in” the New Year. Most Americans love watching the festivities in Times Square, NYC on TV, where they can see live music, entertainment, and the famous “ball drop” that happens at midnight.
A very popular American tradition is making “New Year’s Resolutions”. These are goals or promises to improve your life in the year to come. Common resolutions are going to the gym, eating healthier, or saving more money. Americans often share their resolutions and encourage each other to keep them for the whole year.
