Christmas is coming soon! Here are some interesting Christmas traditions from around the world.
Germany
The tradition of having a Christmas tree in your house originated in Germany. Queen Victoria’s husband, Albert introduced a tree, and other British families copied the tradition.
The UK
One British tradition at Christmas is kissing under the mistletoe. Mistletoe is a plant that has green leaves and white berries during the Christmas period. People decorate their houses with the plant, and the tradition is for people to kiss under the plant. This tradition started in the 18th Century, but is still popular today.
Australia
In Australia Christmas is in the middle of summer, so many Australians go to the beach to have barbecues around Christmas Day. Children believe that in Australia, Santa Claus gives his reindeer a rest and instead uses kangaroos.
Poland
In Poland at Christmas the main meal has 12 dishes, one for each month of the year. Everyone has to eat at least some of every dish. The most important one is beetroot soup – many children dislike the taste, but they have to eat a little. The main dish is carp. In the past it was kept alive in the bathtub until Christmas Day.
