そろそろ年末に近づてきておりますが、クリスマスはどのようにお過ごし予定でしょうか❔🌈

今回は、日本とは気候が正反対の夏のオーストラリアのクリスマスについて
メルボルン出身のAi先生に紹介してくれました🎀

Christmas in Australia 🇦🇺🐨

When you think of Christmas, people usually think of things such as snow, reindeer, hot drinks such as eggnog and hot chocolate, and spending time with loved ones. While we share many similar traditions to countries such as America, such as putting up the christmas tree and sharing presents. However, in Australia Christmas occurs during summer. This means there is no chance of snow, and it is often too hot for other traditions such as ugly Christmas sweaters. Compared to Japan, Christmas is a public holiday and many people spend it with family. Whereas in Japan, it is not considered a public holiday and many people spend Christmas with their friends or partners.

Food 🍗🍕

For many people, the traditional christmas dinner includes turkey with stuffing or other types of roasted meat such as roast beef or ham. In Australia, while people do enjoy a good roast, it is also common to celebrate with cold meats, seafood such as prawns and oysters, and salads. Apparently, Australians usually eat around 22,000 tonnes of prawns during the Christmas period. That’s a lot of prawns! In terms of dessert, you can’t go wrong with a good pavlova. What is a pavlova you ask? It’s a meringue based dessert topped with whipped cream and lots of seasonal fresh fruit!

Beach🏝️🐬

In Australia, Santa does things differently. He is often seen hitting the beach. Which is also where you’ll find many australians. Rather than spending Christmas at home, around the fireplace, many Aussies will spend it outdoors having barbecues and playing outdoor games such as cricket.

Carols by Candlelight 🕯️🌃

Another popular Christmas tradition in Australia is Carols by Candlelight. This was a tradition that was started in Australia and it is where people gather outdoors to sing carols by candlelight. There will usually be live performances accompanied by a symphony orchestra. These events can range from local events to large scale gatherings.

私も以前冬にオーストラリアに訪れた時に、日本から暖かいセーターとコートを着ていき、オーストラリアの空港に到着した途端にすぐに半袖に着替えるという体験をしたことがあります😁
