Hi, I’m Alan and I arrived here recently in Japan from Canada. I lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba. One of the coldest cities if not the coldest city in North America. Temperature there usually reach up to -40 to -45 degrees celsius. There’s a period where you can see the Northern Lights 30 minute drive outside the city and it’s pretty awesome.

I used to live in the Philippines before moving to Canada where I had extensive experience teaching English to different nationalities from Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Russians, Iranians etc. just to name a few, so I guess you can say I’m quite exposed to different cultures. When I moved to Canada I took my CTESL certification and I had the privilege to teach in the University of Manitoba where I worked for the ELC(English Language Centre) department as an English Language Instructor to international students preparing to take their CanTest. It was a very fulfilling job but when Covid hit, it also affected the number of enrollies so I had to move on and find another occupation.

I really missed teaching and I had always wanted to visit Japan ever since I was a kid so I gave applying for a teaching job in Japan a shot and luckily I’m here. For now, my Japanese is very limited but I’m hoping to improve it someday. One of my plans in the future is to travel across Japan and take many pictures of its beautiful scenery. If time and budget permits; I also would like to start a food/travel blog where I can share all things awesome about Japan to the world.

In my free time, I used to go thru different places around Tokyo where I get off a random station and walked around and try to explore the city. I haven’t done it in a while since summer here in Japan is way more hotter than I expected but when it gets cooler, I’m looking forward to explore more of Japan and other exciting places outside of Tokyo; hopefully with a good camera this time.

My biggest advice in learning English is to be comfortable with it. I know it may be daunting but if you have fun studying it will be more of a hobby than an actual task. So relax and try to enjoy it. See you in my class!
