Greetings, this is Brittany, from Missouri, U.S.A. I’ve been teaching here at NOVA for almost 9 years now. Over the many years I’ve lived in Japan, I’ve noticed some interesting differences between America and Japan.
One of my favorite things to tell students about was my first experience at a Japanese supermarket. I have a sweet tooth and love to snack. When someone likes to eat very sweet things, we call that having a ‘sweet tooth’. Because of my sweet tooth, I bought many snacks at the supermarket my first time there.
When I got home, I opened a box of cookies to discover that each cookie was wrapped individually. I had to open each cookie I wanted to eat and it made SO much trash. I thought to myself, ‘Why are Japanese people so wasteful?’ It wasn’t until later that I learned about the ‘sharing’ culture of Japan, and that many people buy snacks to share with friends, family, or coworkers. The individual wrapping keeps people from touching food that others may eat. In America, we also share snacks, but we don’t care so much about the touching risk. We like the convenience of being able to eat our snacks easily. But maybe this is why some Americans eat too much? I think when I see all the cookies open together I can’t stop eating them, they look so delicious!
