Spring rites of passage…
March for many Canadians and Americans usually means March Madness (college basketball playoffs) and tax deadlines!
For large parts of North America, it is still winter, definitely not picnic season, or time to sit on the ground!
Even if the temperature is mild, the ground can be muddy or frozen! Summer is more picnic and barbeque season.
There are some cities in North America where you can attend cherry blossom viewing events, but these are usually on the east and west coasts and the weather is usually a little closer to spring conditions. For example, New York City and Washington D.C. host long-running annual cherry blossom viewing events, but these are often put on by societies, associations or park authorities.
In central North America, people are starting to think about spring things in a wishful way, but there is still snow on the ground and temperatures are often well below zero.
In March and April, buds and shoots will slowly start to appear, but most people are thinking about more than just one kind of tree or flower.
They are looking for crocus and lily and other bulbs to appear as the snow melts.
Once the ground is thawed (unfrozen) many people start to think about their gardens and spring planting.
Spring is more about rebirth of the ground, the awakening and return of animals, and the end of a long, dark, cold winter.
I do enjoy cherry blossoms, but after living in Japan for such a long time, they sort of blend into the daily scenery for me.
I am more interested in the different varieties that appear at different times in different regions in different colours beyond just pink. I enjoy walking around to see how everything is changing and not having to wear a hat and gloves.
I can appreciate how short lived some types of cherry blossoms are, but maybe because I am from central Canada, I do not feel sad or nostaligic about spring.
It is not a season of saying goodbye to people and friends for North Americans. Students in Canada and the USA are thinking about spring and Easter holidays, and in April university students are starting to worry about final exams.
March is often a confusing month for getting dressed, so I think more about what layers of clothing I need than what flowers are appearing.
I think watching spring come at night is especially nice, since we can new things appearing without the huge noisy crowds. We can also better appreciate the sounds of birds and the different feeling and aroma of the air outside at night.
These are just my thoughts about the season, which for me is about slightly more daylight, sports events, and chocolate Easter eggs!
