Rice, Rice, Baby: The Joy of Lemper Ayam in My Childhood
As a child growing up in Rotterdam, Netherlands, I was always surrounded by delicious food. One of my favorite snacks was lemper ayam, a traditional Indonesian dish made with glutinous rice and filled with shredded chicken. My aunties, who were not actually my aunts but close family friends, would often make lemper ayam for me.
I remember the joy of biting into the soft, sticky rice and savoring the savory chicken filling. Even though my aunties were from Indonesia, they never taught me the Indonesian language. Instead, I learned to appreciate their culture through the flavors and aromas of their cooking.
Food is not just a way to fill our stomachs, but a powerful connection to our past, our culture, and our identity. For me, the flavors of lemper ayam will always transport me back to the joy and comfort of my childhood, and the loving embrace of my aunties.
Looking back, I realize that my aunties and their lemper ayam played a significant role in shaping my sense of identity. As a child, I often felt confused about my own identity, being the only Asian kid in my school. However, through the experience of eating lemper ayam and sharing in the warmth of my aunties’ love, I found a sense of belonging and connection.
Now, as an adult who can speak Indonesian fluently, I continue to cherish the memories of my childhood and the flavors of lemper ayam. They remind me of where I come from and the values that shape my life to this day.
