Americans have a different sense of size than Japanese people. One of the ways this shows up is in dogs. In Japan, a golden retriever is considered a big dog. But for Americans, it’s just medium. Any dog that can fit on your lap is small in America. Bigger than that is medium. So what is a big dog? Dogs like Great Danes, Saint Bernards or Great Pyranese are the big dogs – almost as heavy as a person, big enough for a small child to ride on. It’s hard to imagine keeping a dog like that in Tokyo, but in America many people have great big yards, so while it isn’t common, you’ll sometimes see dogs like that. And dogs like labradors and retreviers are very common. Of course, small dogs are very popular too, especially in big cities like New York. But there really is a different sense of size. But whatever size dog you get, they all have big hearts and love their owners just as much!
