Maid Cafes: A foreigners experience
Just as many other foreigners are familiar with the maid cafe industry, I too have always heard about and seen them around, but I have never had any interest in them because I have some amount of self respect. However, after a few drinks with a friend of mine, he convinced me to give it a try since he offered to pay. So, I took him up on his offer and we proceeded to go to one. There I experienced one of the most unique and extremely bizarre hours of my life. It felt as though I was being assaulted by the sheer magnetism of the almost fever dream like atmosphere. I was unable to process the instructions they were giving me, for instance when asking for one of the maids to take your order, you are required to say “nyan” while simultaneously gesturing cat paws since they will not respond to the usual “suimasen” or anything likewise. Then came the menu. The state of the menu was like a fairy and an idol group had co-written the names of the food and drink, for example there was a ramune soda based drink which was called something along the lines of “love love cute ramune special” or something equally as ridiculous.
