On hot days, there’s nothing quite like having an ice cold snack to cool you down. In Japan, you can go to any convenience store and buy all kinds of different ice cream and frozen fruit bars. The same is true in America, but that’s not what we usually do when we hit the local convenience store, especially if it’s a 7-11.
In America, 7-11 is known for one thing, and one thing only: the Slurpee.
If you end up at a different convenience store, or perhaps in a movie theater, you can get a similar, but inferior, drink called the Icee. The Slurpee is a frozen drink made of syrup and water, frozen and churned constantly to reach the perfect fluffy yet drinkable consistency. It’s basically like Japanese shaved ice, but a bit denser and with more liquid so it can be drunk through a big straw. The Icee is the same, but not quite as soft and fluffy. In either case though, the overwhelmingly sugary taste and ice cold temperature make them popular beverages or snacks among kids and young people.
But why the name? Icee is easy enough to understand, a simple homonym
(word that sounds the same but is spelled differently) for “icy”, but what is Slurpee? Well, “to slurp” means to drink noisily, like soup from a spoon or the last of a drink through a straw. It implies a thirst that is beyond caring about manners. So a person who slurps would be a “slurper”, and what they slurp would be the “slurpee”, like “employer” and “employee”. Hence, the Slurpee – the frozen beverage that America loves to slurp in the hot summer days.
いかがでしたか❓
SlurpeeとIceeとても美味しそうですよね🤤💙
