Hi. It’s Robert. I would like to tell you one of the reasons why I like summers in Japan.
As I am sure you know, summer is the season for ghost stories. I love scary stories. Scary movies and other spooky media are commonly released in the summer season. Every year I look forward to watching the Fuji Television special Honto-ni atta kowai hanashi. Aired on TV in August or sometimes Halloween because summer season has the same eerie resonance as Halloween does in the U.S. and other western countries.
I read somewhere that the association of summer with spine-chilling tales has its roots in the Buddhist tradition. The Buddhist festival of the dead, Obon, takes place in summer and during this season it is believed that the boundaries between the physical and spiritual worlds grow thin, allowing the spirits of the dead to revisit their families. However, not all spirits that return at this time are benevolent and other beings of more sinister intent can also slip our world.
Actually, traditionally, Halloween was more similar to Obon. The tradition of wearing a costume started as a way for people to protect themselves from sinister and vengeful spirits. Nowadays, just about anything can be worn as a Halloween costume.
