In Japan, it’s traditional to clean the house at the end of December to welcome in the new year. In America and many other western countries, this kind of big, annual cleaning is performed in spring. Not surprisingly, this led to it being called Spring Cleaning, a name used for all kinds of sales and even as a general phrase to mean “throwing out the old and starting off fresh again”. But why the difference in timing?
While in Japan, it’s meant to welcome the New Year with a fresh, clean start, in the West this is done for a much more practical reason: it’s too cold in winter! A good cleaning means opening all the doors and windows to let in fresh air, washing everything and hanging things out to dry. All of these things are miserable or impossible during the dead of winter when the New Year rolls around, especially in snow heavy northern countries, so everyone would rather just hole up inside. Instead, once the weather warms up in spring, it’s the perfect time to open up and air everything out.
Spiritually speaking, many ancient western cultures, especially those in Northern Europe where the winters were long and cold, viewed spring as the beginning of the new year, when plants came back to life and animals flourished. To them, the world that had died during winter was coming back to life. So in some ways, Spring Cleaning is just like the Japanese tradition: cleaning out house and home to welcome in the New Year with a fresh start!
