外国人も同じで日本に来て日本で住んでみて驚くことがたくさん( ﾟДﾟ)
今日は、Chrisが日本に来て驚いたことを聞いてみました😄
どんなことに驚いたか聞いてみましょう。
One of the first things in Japan that I noticed was different from where I come from is the price of fruit. I was very shocked when I first came to Japan to see a melon for sale in a grocery store in Kobe for nearly ¥3000! I was so surprised that I took a photo of it to send to my friends in the US. I’m from Los Angeles and the average price of a melon is about $2.75 (about ¥316). And it’s not just melons, all fruit and vegetables seem to be more expensive here in Japan. I regularly pay about ¥600 for a bag of 6 or 7 oranges at the grocery store here in Takamatsu and in Los Angeles, I would get a bag of 10 or 12 oranges for about $3.00 (¥345). Tomatoes here are usually about ¥100 each, in LA you can get a package of 6 for about $2.00 (¥230).

I think there are many reasons for this. One is that a large amount of the fruit in the United States is grown in California. Because of this, the trip from the farm to the grocery store produce section is a short one so the cost of transportation is not a significant part of the price of the fruit. Another reason I think the price of fruit is higher in Japan is simply the quality of it. I’m not saying the quality of the fruit in Los Angeles is bad, but the Japanese fruit is definitely higher quality. When I describe Japanese fruit to my friends in the states, I use two words; “expensive” and “beautiful”. The fruit here is definitely some of the best looking fruit I have ever seen, I saw some ¥3000 grapes in the YouMe Town grocery store that were so beautiful, they didn’t even look real!
So yes, the fruit in Japan is much more expensive than I am used to seeing, but the quality is also a lot higher than I am used to so I guess it all balances out.
（輸送費も価格の違いに関係すると思いますが、Chrisの言うように品質もその一つですね。日本のフルーツは、いろいろと品種改良されジューシーで美味しいですよね。）
もう一つ教えてくれたのが、日本ではスーパーに見た目のいいくだものや野菜が並んでいて、農家直営や道の駅などで売られているのが傷ありだったりすることが多いと思うのですが、アメリカでは逆なことが多いらしいです😲
