日本では、チョコレートを女性から男性に渡すことが多いですが、
海外では男性から女性に贈り物をします。
今回は、”Valentine’s Day”についてChrisが教えてくれます。
Valentine’s Day in the United States is a little different from Valentine’s Day in Japan. The date (February 14th) and the general idea are the same, it’s a holiday for couples that’s all about love and romance. However, in the US, it is traditional for the man to buy a gift for the woman, unlike Japan where the woman buys a gift for the man.
In the US, the man is expected to buy some sort of romantic gift such as flowers, chocolates, jewelry, etc. and usually a card as well. He is also expected to take his wife or girlfriend out for a romantic dinner. The more serious the relationship, the more expensive the gift, I have known men to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on jewelry, flowers and dinner. And I can tell you from experience, forgetting to get a gift or take your girlfriend or wife to a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day can get a man into a lot of trouble!
何が欲しいかわからなかったから彼女に聞いたら”Nothing.”っと言われたので、バレンタインの日に何も用意しなかったらかなり怒られたみたいです！
So, Valentine’s Day in the US may sound a bit like White Day to you, the day in Japan when the man buys gifts for the woman. This is definitely true, they are very similar. The main difference between our two countries is that we don’t have a day like Japanese Valentine’s Day. There is no romantic holiday where women are expected to buy gifts or chocolate for men. We have Valentine’s Day on February 14th where the man is expected to buy gifts for his wife or girlfriend, but no opposite holiday! Basically, a man can expect to receive gifts on Christmas or his birthday and that’s about it.
