The end of October is approaching and with it, Halloween! Halloween is a pretty popular holiday in the US and is celebrated in different ways. For families, it’s a pretty busy Holiday. Typically, they will decorate their houses and yards with spooky things like ghosts and spider webs. There’s also a lot of shopping to be done! Parents have to buy candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters, the perfect pumpkin to carve up, and help look for a costume for their kids. The jack-o-lanterns can range from the pretty basic design to very elaborate works of art (google some jack-o-lanterns if you’re interested in how crazy it can get). On Halloween night the parents will walk around with their kids in costumes going door-to-door trick-or-treating. After you’ve visited all the houses you make your way back home and take a look at all of the candy you’ve collected! Trick-or-treating tip, usually if the house leaves their porch (front door) light on, it means they are giving out candy, however, if the light is off you shouldn’t visit them! People will often leave bowls of candies for the kids to get on their own at times as well, and of course some kids may take more than they should. For, high schoolers, college kids, and maybe people in their early 20s it is a different kind of celebration. The most popular thing for this age group would be costume parties. You will dress up in a costume and go to to a party, usually at someone’s house, a college frat house, or some kind of party venue. These parties usually have a lot of drinking and dancing. Although, not everyone likes to party it up. Many people will just get together with friends and marathon a bunch of their favorite Halloween movies, such as Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc…Anyway Halloween is a pretty exciting time in the US, how will you celebrate yours?

10月も終わりに近づいてきましたが、それと同時にハロウィンもやってきます。ハロウィンはアメリカではとても人気のある祝日で、様々な方法で祝われています。家族にとっては、とても忙しい休日です。一般的には、家や庭をお化けや蜘蛛の巣などの不気味なもので飾り付けます。また、たくさんの買い物もしなければなりません。親は、トリック・オア・トリートに配るお菓子を買ったり、切り分けるのに最適なカボチャを買ったり、子供の衣装を探したりしなければなりません。ジャック・オ・ランタンは、基本的なデザインのものから、非常に手の込んだ芸術作品まで様々です（どれほどクレイジーになるか興味がある方は、ジャック・オ・ランタンをググってみてください）。ハロウィンの夜、親たちはコスチュームを着た子供たちと一緒に、一軒一軒トリック・オア・トリート（お菓子をもらうための訪問）をして回ります。すべての家を回った後、家に戻って、集めたお菓子を見てみましょう。トリック・オア・トリートのコツは、通常、家のポーチ（玄関）の明かりをつけたままにしている家は、お菓子を配っていることを意味しますが、明かりが消えている場合は、訪問しないほうがいいでしょう。また、子供たちが自分で取れるようにと、ボウルにキャンディを入れておくこともありますが、もちろん必要以上に取ってしまう子供もいます。高校生や大学生、そして20代前半の人たちにとっては、また違った楽しみ方ができるでしょう。この年代で最も人気があるのは、コスチューム・パーティーです。衣装を着て、誰かの家や大学のクラブハウスなどのパーティー会場に行きます。このようなパーティーでは、お酒を飲んだり、踊ったりすることが多いです。しかし、誰もがパーティー好きというわけではありません。多くの人は、友人と集まって、「13日の金曜日」や「悪魔のいけにえ」など、お気に入りのハロウィン映画を何度も見ます。
