English, being the most widely spoken language in the world as an official language in roughly 67 countries, is naturally a very diverse and varied language, but did you know that there is an estimated over 160 distinct dialects of English across the globe?
Unfortunately, my hometown of Leicester City resides in the heart of England and thus I speak standard, almost “Queen’s English”, so instead today I will be talking about some of my favorite slang from across the British Isles.
Firstly, I’d like to begin with a couple of words from my mother’s home county of Yorkshire in northeast England. Here, the word “Owt” is used to mean “something” and it’s opposite “Nowt” can be used to mean “nothing”. Additionally, they prefer to say “breakfast, dinner, tea” instead of “breakfast, lunch, dinner”.
Across the sea lie our cousins in Ireland, while English is usually their first language, being a land of Celtic heritage they often speak with some more colourful vocabulary. “Craic” is a popular word used to ask about gossip or news, often used in the phrase “what’s the craic?” instead of “what’s new?”. Another common word also used in Scotland is “Wee”, used to describe small things e.g. “Wee lad” to mean “young boy”.
Lastly, we go to the nation’s capital of London. Here “Cockney Rhyming Slang” is famous for its use of strange and unusual phrases to represent simple words, for example “apples and pears” = “stairs”, “butcher’s hook” = “look” and “Fisherman’s daughter = water”
