今回はオーストラリア出身のHarrison先生から、国によるスペルの違いについてメッセージをもらいました！

“I wanted to practise driving so I grabbed my licence and fuelled my car to head to the corner shop. I bought a litre of milk, but when I got home I realized the colour and flavour were a bit strange.”
These sentences wouldn’t be correct in American English, but they’re perfectly fine in most other places (The U.K., Europe, Australia, South Africa, etc.). Sometimes students have asked me about my spelling when it’s different to the textbook, so I thought I’d write about it today!
In British English, practise is a verb (“I practise the piano after school”) and practice is a noun (“I’m going to the doctor’s practice”). American English uses practice for both. In British English we also spell other similar nouns with -ce, like “licence” or “defence“, but confusingly they’re spelt with -se instead for American English.
Doubling letters before adding -ing or -ed is always confusing, but this is also different sometimes between British English (“fuelling”, “travelled”) and American English (“fueling”, “traveled”).
One of the most common differences I notice though, is using -our in British English with words like “colour“, “flavour” or “armour“. In American English, they cut out the letter ‘u’.
Hopefully this will help you to recognise some of the different spelling when you’re travelling overseas, such as visiting the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
