Hello all! Today, I’d like to share with you about my love of road trips!
Most people tend to do long-distance traveling by airplane, but road trips are a what we call long-distance journeys on the road. Traveling on the plane has its benefits, of course, but I love road trips because they combine two of my passions, cars and travel.
I’ve always loved cars from an early age, because my father had a car business and I was always around them growing up. My mother told me when I was in kindergarten, instead of playing with the other kids, I would sometimes sit at the window all day naming the cars that drove by. I was a bit of a weird kid. So, naturally, I went to get my driver’s license the day I turned 16, which is the driving age in Canada. I’ve loved driving ever since!
In the summer after my second year of university, I went to visit my French friend’s family home in the South of France, together with another friend from Canada. His family were kind enough to let us borrow their car, so the three of us went on a road trip from a small city called Beziers, France, to Florence, Italy, driving along the Mediterranean coast and even going through Monaco at one point. We were young and didn’t have a lot of money, so we were very thankful to be able to travel by car. To save money, we bought a tent for about 30 Euros and camped most nights instead of staying in a hostel or hotel, and for food, we mostly bought french bread (baguettes) and sandwich ingredients. This didn’t bother us at all, because the camping was more fun and gave us more flexibility and freedom, and the food is so great in Europe anyway! Even though we didn’t have a lot of money, it’s still probably the best vacation I’ve had in my life.
It goes to show that what’s important isn’t money, but great people and good times!
