英語がある程度話せる方でも時々、聞いたことのない単語だな・・・と外国の方と話したり、映画を観た時に感じたことがあるという人がいらっしゃるかもしれません。
ご存知の方も多いでしょうが、イギリスで使われる英語とアメリカで使われる英語は同じいぎを指す時でも少し違う単語を使うことがあります。
そこで本日はイギリス出身の講師Michaelにイギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いについて教えてもらいました！
Just a quick blog entry to give some examples of differences in vocabulary between British and American English.
① Pants– In American English this word means trousers, in Britain means underwear.
(trousersはズボン、underwearは下着）
② The front of a car– In America this is called a hood, in Britain a bonnet.
③ In America people go on vacation. In Britain people take a holiday.
④ After we’ve eaten in a restaurant in England we ask for the bill, in America they ask for the cheque.
⑤ In Britain we call the best sport in the world is called football. In America it’s called soccer.
People in Britain will usually know all the American words as well as the British ones as we watch American movies and TV a lot. American’s though will often not understand the British words.
日本ではアメリカ英語を学ぶことが多いので日本で育った方はアメリカ英語の方が馴染みがあるかもしれませんね。
