Hatching season.

From December to march of each year down the coast of Australia is turtle nesting season. It is from February to marc though that all throughout the night, baby turtles can be seen crawling out of their nest and beginning their journey out to sea.

From Shark Bay (Western Australia) to Carnarvon (Queensland) tourists flock from all over the world to take part in turtle night tours. This is because the best time to see them is at night, this is when the majority of turtles will escape their nest and make their way along the sand and into the sea.

Many of these tour operators will include a chance to learn about turtles and their ecosystem before then going out in the dark of night with torches to beaches.

During these tours there are times when people will try to help the hatchling turtles, however, make ensure you do not touch them. Sea Turtles are protected under federal and state law, so it’s best to simply allow them to crawl their way to the sea as best they can.

Even though you shouldn’t touch the sea turtles, many people will suggest you help in other ways though. During hatching season through the day you can see volunteers and tour goers filling in holes in the beach and removing obstacles so the turtles have an easier path and so a better chance of making it to the sea by themselves.

One way you can directly help them though is by keeping other animals away. Crabs and birds will flock to beaches during this season as the sea turtles will make for an easy meal for them. Though this is simply nature at work, you can see people waving off flocks of birds and pushing crabs away to allow the turtles the time to make it to the sea.

All in all, even if you don’t get involved directly, it is still an amazing sight to see just how many hatchling turtles make their way out of their nests and off into the ocean.
