★Matt談★
G’day (“Hello” in Aussie English).
Some of you may know me. I’m Matthew William Whitton
(or, just “Matt” in Japan). I teach English at Soka NOVA
every Monday.
There are so many lovely & wonderful students, that it’s a
pleasure to come all the way here (almost an hour!) from
my home in Urawa. But, I’m not just a teacher of English
in Japan. I’m also a writer & illustrator. My latest piece
of writing, for a Tokyo magazine, is entitled ‘Double’. It’s
about me and my half-Japanese daughter.
The cultural differences between Japan and Tasmania are,
of course, large. For example, in Japan my daughter thinks
it’s normal and natural to go out with her friends anywhere
and at anytime. My family background is both Jewish and
Indian. I’m sorry to say that such ‘freedom’ is culturally,
completely ‘taboo’ (unacceptable) for daughters in families of
our sort. If we agree to our daughters going outside of the
home it is always under strict agreement to depart and arrive
back home at fixed-times, and NEVER with boys at all. Only
with female friends, or relatives (such as cousins).
I wonder if Japanese people can understand or accept such
social standards? If you want to, please respond to my opinion,
and tell me your thoughts!
