TABLE TENNIS
Table tennis was created in the late 19th century in England.
The legend says it was started by upper class English people who used the cover of cigar boxes for rackets and a rounded cork from a champagne bottle as the ball.
It is similar to tennis but the scoring system is different. One match has a maximum of seven games. The first player to 11 points wins a game.
Every two points, the service changes. In doubles, the players must alternate with each other hitting the ball.
Since 1988 when Table Tennis joined the Olympics, China has won 28 of the 32 available gold medals, so they are the country to beat of course.
In the Paralympics, depending on their impairment, table tennis players use wheelchairs, or even hold the racket in their mouths.
Table tennis vocabulary:
Bat(another name for the racket. Each side must be a different color to identify which side is inverted rubber and which is pimpled)
Inverted rubber(The smooth surface of the table tennis bat)
Pimples(The side of the table tennis bed that has little bumps on it)
Let(when the service ball hits the net)
Lob(when the ball is hit high in the air to land on the opponents side of the table with lots of spin)
