Scott`s home town is Dundee, the 4th-biggest city in Scotland. Dundee is on Scotland`s East coast, North of Edinburgh, on the river Tay, which is Scotland`s longest river, and a famous river for salmon fishing.
Dundee is surrounded by lots of beautiful forests, mountains and beaches, including Broughty Ferry beach and Kinshaldy beach. A short drive from Dundee, you can find Glamis Castle (which is the most haunted castle in Scotland) and St. Andrews (home of the oldest golf course in the world).
Originally, Dundee was formed as a port town, making money from catching fish and whales. Many of the villages around Dundee are still famous for fishing, like Arbroath, where you can buy special smoked fish called “Arbroath smokies”.
Over time, Dundee moved from being a fishing town to being more industrial, with hundreds of factories being built to produce textiles, food and newspapers. Interestingly, most of the people who worked at these factories were women – their husbands were called “kettle boilers” because they stayed at home, made cups of tea, cooked dinner and raised the children!
In the early 1900s, a ship called “HMS Discovery” was built in Dundee. It was sent on a scientific journey to Antarctica to find the South Pole. Unfortunately, the Discovery team were beaten by Norwegian explorers, but the ship now sits in Dundee harbour, and Dundee is still known as “The city of Discovery”.
Nowadays, Dundee is an important city for many reasons. Firstly, it`s two universities – Dundee University and Abertay University – are world-leaders in many topics. Dundee University has one of the best medical researh departments in the UK, and has discovered hundreds of new types of medicine for cancer, malaria and other diseases. Abertay University is equally famous as Europe`s best university for video game design and production.
Alongside the universities, Dundee is also home to some of the UK`s most famous comic books, like The Beano, The Dandy and 3000AD – many famous comic book artists and writers got their first jobs working in Dundee.
Finally, Dundee is an extremely friendly city with hard-working people, a great sense of community, and new art, music and charity projects appearing every week. It`s also officially Scotland`s sunniest city!
