As technology has evolved, the different ways we can present the movie to an audience has also evolved alongside it. In the first half of the 20th century, movie theaters started out projecting from film reels (usually 35mm) onto a large screen using a film projector. Modern theaters then started using digital projectors early into the 21st century. With the advent of television in the mid 20th century, the demand for movies at home increased and that’s when we started seeing home video formats such as VHS which was later replaced by DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. Then, inevitably movies started being available for access online. Convenience seems to be the root cause of the blossoming home/on-demand market. Why get dressed-up and drive 30 minutes to the movie theater when I can see the latest Hollywood blockbusters in my pajamas on the couch?
I’ll tell you why. It’s because movies are meant to be consumed in the theater; they’re meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Personally, I can understand the sentiment behind the backing of music streaming services such as Spotify. The quality of the music itself isn’t diminished nor does it hinder the experience of consuming the art itself. Those in the music industry itself also advocate music streaming. Going to a concert is a different kettle of fish, however. One that is unique to music, and one that cinema does not have an equivalent to. Music can be, and is, disseminated in different ways – as a studio recording, and played live to an audience. Movies cannot be distributed in different ways. That is, the finished product – the art itself – does not take different forms. A movie is shot and edited and presented to an audience – the way we choose to present it does vary and has varied greatly over the course of cinemas 100 year – or so – history. And I’m not talking about different edits. I’m talking about the movie-going experience.

With the enormous success of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (due in part to the Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon) and director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 taking the world by storm, it seems the once impending threat of streaming services, such as Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video and Disney+, replacing the movie going experience has, for the time being anyway, hit a roadblock in the form of IMAX.

Art – great art – has always been just as much about the way we consume it as it has been about the art itself. Does a painting have the same effect if it’s hung in someone’s living room wall as opposed to being pinned up in The Louvre? Would a great novel have the same impact if you were to read it on your morning commute instead of enjoying it in your armchair by an open fire with a glass of red wine? And why do some purists still lecture us on the importance of having vinyl records when we can just listen to our favorite songs on Spotify or Apple Music?

本日も、「コーヒー大好きMarshalのおすすめカフェ」をご紹介致します。

コーヒーと日本のレトロなカフェが大好きで、毎週のようにカフェに行っているMarshal。昨年もたくさんのおすすめカフェブログを書いてくれましたが、今年もたくさん行っているようですので、最近のおすすめカフェをご紹介致します。ぜひリーディングの練習に挑戦してみてください😊。

Marshal おすすめカフェ㉖
☕️ Kadan(part 2)
🚃 桜木町駅徒歩2分

It was much more spacious than I thought inside this cafe. There were smoking and non smoking sections, but there wasn’t any smoke when I was there. Also, computers were not allowed! That might have been the first time I’ve seen something like that. Walking straight forward from the entrance, I was surprised to see that there was a ticket machine that we can use to order. As you may already know, I truly prefer ordering with touch panels rather than speaking with someone, so I was happy to use this Showa touch panel. Sadly, after handling my taxes that day, my wallet was looking pretty slim. I only had 300 yen, just enough for a hot coffee at Kaban. Now honestly, I was a bit disappointed to see that the coffee comes straight from a machine. But, for 300 yen, I shouldn’t really complain either. To make up for the average taste, the coffee was served in an adorable pink floral cup with a matching floral saucer. This was all placed on a small matching tray. It was extremely cute and even a bit nostalgic, which made the experience special. I sat down by one of the large windows and enjoyed my view of the people passing in the hallway. I was a bit afraid to lean back in my chair though, the furniture seemed so old that it might break completely if I put my full weight on it. All in all, it was a very charming place. I’d like to try their dessert options next time, like the pudding pancakes. What a lucky find! I definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a retro cafe in Sakuragicho.

☕️ Kadan(part 1)

I found this cute cafe completely by chance after getting my taxes done! After finishing up at the tax office, I was looking for a place to get some beer and yakitori to celebrate. I ended up going to Sakuragicho. It was raining quite hard that day, so I followed the stairs down to the underground Pio City to stay dry. I vividly remember seeing the image of a clown as I descended the stairs. Looking at it, I got the feeling that this area was built quite some time ago. I wondered who made the decision to place such an uncanny clown at the entrance of their shopping area. “Why would you do this?” I would ask him. I wonder if the answer would be even more haunting than that clown. Horrors aside, I was surprised to see that Pio city was a bit complex to navigate. There were several small stairs and corridors that I could easily get lost in. This trip was turning into a journey. It was honestly quite fun just walking around this place. Eventually, on the second basement level, I found a rectangular area full of old izakaya. Doing a lap around the place, I saw that these izakaya were pretty old, but still had long lines of customers! It was fascinating to see these places not only surviving, but thriving in modernity. The only place that wasn’t an izakaya was Kadan. The Showa era exterior was an immediate draw for me, and as I took a closer look at the showcase of their food, I saw they had pudding hotcakes! It was really just a stack of pancakes cut in half, with a mountain of pudding placed in the middle. “How extravagant” I thought. I had already forgotten about the beer and yakitori. I headed in without hesitation.

☕️ Rojean (again!)
🚃 池ノ上駅徒歩4分

I really enjoy going to Rojean. It’s a bit far, on the Inokashira line, but it’s definitely worth the trip. The food is really second to none, and the atmosphere is so relaxing. Every visit is a wonderful experience in my opinion. On our second visit here, the menu had changed a bit. My face lit up when I saw that they had sloppy joes on the menu! Sloppy joes are quite popular back home, they’re even served in schools during lunch. A sloppy joe is a hamburger where the beef is minced and mixed into a sauce. The meat sauce is placed onto the bun with toppings. There are many legends as to why we call it a sloppy joe. One such legend is that a cook name Joe in Iowa added tomato sauce to his loose meat sandwiches. Sloppy is another word for messy or loose, and it’s quite easy to make a mess when you’re eating a sloppy joe. Of course, the true origin of the name is lost to time. When I saw they had these burgers at the restaurant, I said out loud “Oh my god, they have sloppy joes.” When the staff heard that, they could guess I was from America. We ordered a sloppy joe, a grilled cheese sandwich with soup, and a huge sundae.

本日は、2024年4月以降のサービス変更についてお知らせです。今月より、サービス内容を一部変更させていただく選びとなりましたので、ご案内申し上げます。

①🌼講師アンケート制度の変更

生徒様からのお声を、これまで以上に講師・レッスンの質の向上へつなげられるよう、講師アンケート制度を変更いたします。

【従来】
前月ご受講のレッスンを、翌月1日から10日にアンケート回答（講師1名につき1回ご回答可能）

【2024年4月より】
レッスンご受講当日から1ヶ月の間にアンケート回答（レッスン1回につき1回ご回答可能）
→レッスンごとに評価いただくことで、細やかに生徒様のご満足度を確認し、迅速にサービス改善へつなげてまいります。

②🌼予約制のマンツーマンレッスンに、クオリティ保証制度を導入

予約制のマンツーマンレッスンに対して、クオリティ保証制度を導入いたします。万が一レッスンにご満足いただけなかった（レッスンご受講から1週間以内に講師アンケートでレッスン評価「1」を送信頂いた）場合、レッスンポイントをご返還いたします。レッスン評価は、講師アンケートに記載いただいた内容をもとに、カウンセリングにて詳細のお伺いをさせていただき、即時改善できるよう講師へフィードバックしてまいります。

※固定制のマンツーマンレッスン、ならびに全グループレッスンは対象外です
※レッスンから 1 週間以内に講師アンケートにご回答いただいたものが対象です

③🌼マイル制度の変更
上記制度への変更・導入に伴い、マイル制度を一部変更させていただきます。

【従来】
・レッスン出席に応じて、マイル加算
・毎年4月1日から翌年3月31日までの加算マイルに基づき、6月1日からのステータスを決定

【2024年4月より】
・出席したレッスンの講師アンケートのご回答後に、マイル加算。
・毎年4月1日から翌年3月31日までの加算マイルに基づき、4月1日からのステータスを決定。
・来年4月より、決定されたステータスに応じたレッスン料の割引制度を新たに導入予定（レッスン料割引制度は、2025年4月に決定したステータスより導入予定）。

これまで以上に、生徒様のお声をもとにサービスの質の向上を目指し、ご満足をいただけるよう、講師・スタッフ一同、精一杯サポートをさせていただければと存じます。引き続き、よろしくお願い申し上げます。
