Cela fait un mois déjà depuis mon dernier message sur le blog et nous arrivons déjà en novembre.
Que le temps passe vite ! On sent déjà l’hiver arriver avec les températures qui diminuent…

En France, en novembre, nous avons deux jours fériés tous les ans : La Toussaint (le 1er novembre) et le 11 novembre (l’armistice de 1918).
La Toussaint, c’est un peu comme le ‘obon’ catholique. C’est un jour où on honore les morts et les saints.
En général, on va au cimetière déposer des fleurs et allumer un cierge puis on va prier pour les familles croyantes.

Le 11 novembre, c’est aussi un jour où on honore les morts. Mais ce sont surtout les morts de la première guerre mondiale. En effet, le 11 novembre célèbre le jour de l’armistice signée en 1918. En général, le président de la république rend hommage aux morts sur les tombes des défunts en France.

On peut dire que novembre est un mois plutôt froid en France, à cause de la température mais aussi de ses fêtes qui honorent les morts. En tout cas, le mois suivant est un peu plus joyeux avec Noël… J’ai hâte !

It’s been one month already since my last message on the blog, and we are already reaching November.
How fast time goes! We can already feel winter coming with the temperatures that keep falling down…

In France, in November, we have two public holidays every year : La Toussaint (1st November) and the 1918 Armistice (11th November)
La Toussaint, is a little bit like the catholic ‘obon’. It’s a day where we honor the dead and the saints.
In general, we go to the cemetary to bring some flowers and light a candle, and then the catholic families go to pray.

November 11,is also a day where we honor the dead. But it is mainly the dead from the first World War. Indeed, November 11 celebrates the day when the armistice was signed in 1918. In general, the president will visit the graves in France and honor the dead.

We can say that November is a pretty cold month in France, because of the temperature but also because of its national holidays which honor the dead. In any case, the next month will bring a little bit more joy with Christmas… I can’t wait !

本日はハロウィーン当日ですね🌟
Halloweenと言えばアメリカ！
という事でNew Yorkの田舎町出身のJeffreyが
子どもの頃のHalloweenの過ごし方について教えてくれましたよ👻

Everyone’s Halloween experience while growing up is different. I grew up in a really small town in upstate New York that had a population somewhere around 1,000 people. Halloween in my hometown is a big deal since we don’t have so many annual events. On Halloween day we dressed up in our Halloween costumes and went to school. At school we had a Halloween party while showing off our costumes to our classmates.
After school in the early evening, we’d wear our costumes to the main street in town and join a Halloween parade. We’d walk from main street to a kind of community center where we’d enter a costume contest. Judges would determine which of us would be the winner in different categories. These categories included: Scariest costume, funniest costume, most creative costume, etc. I won in the scariest costume category two years in a row. After the contest we’d go trick-or-treating in our neighborhoods. Most adults were really generous giving out candy, so kids usually returned home with huge bags of treats.
What’s Halloween like for you? Do you do anything special to celebrate it?

Comment allez-vous en ce début d’octobre ?

L’automne est une saison très importante en France car elle marque le début du calendrier scolaire, avec la rentrée pour la plupart des élèves français.
En général, il commence à faire froid dès le début de septembre. Et les feuilles d’automne arrivent juste après. D’ailleurs, saviez-vous que la couleur des feuilles d’automne est généralement différente de celle du Japon ? En effet, il y a beaucoup de chênes et de pins en France, comparé aux nombreux érables au Japon. Les couleurs de feuilles sont plutôt colorées d’un orange ou jaune vifs lors de l’automne en France. Vers la fin de septembre, c’est aussi la période des châtaignes et on peut aller faire de la récolte et manger de bons gâteaux aussi !

J’espère que vous passerez un très bon automne cette année aussi.

How are you all doing in this early October?

Autumn is a very important season in France because it marks the beginning of the school calendar, with ‘la rentrée’ (first day of a school year) for most of French students.
In general, it starts to get cool and cold as soon as the beginning of September. And autumn leaves just come afterwards. By the way, did you know that the color of autumn leaves is generally-speaking different from those in Japan? Indeed, in France there are a lot of oak and pine trees compared to the many maple trees in Japan. The color of the leaves is more dark orange or bright yellowish during Autumn in France. Around the end of September, it is also the time for chestnuts which we can harvest and also cook delicious cakes with!

I hope you will also have a very good autumn this year too.

見始めたら止まらなくなってしまって寝不足に…
なんて経験はないでしょうか？
今回はそんなTopicについて
イギリス出身の講師Joeが話してくれましたよ！

Binge-watching is a relatively new expression in the English language, but it has become increasingly common in daily conversation because of media streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and YouTube becoming the most popular way people watch TV shows, movies or streamers.

The word binge can be used as both as a noun and a verb. It is used to describe a period of excessive indulgence, usually for an unhealthy activity, such as eating too much junk food over the weekend, or drinking a lot of alcohol in one night.

So, binge-watching means to watch a LOT of episodes of a TV show or other kinds of video content, back-to-back, in one sitting, without really taking a break.

I stayed at home for all of my Obon summer vacation, but I enjoyed my free time by binge-watching a lot of TV shows I usually don`t have the time or energy to enjoy after work. IT WAS GREAT.

I binge-watched forty episodes of a brilliant British comedy panel show called Taskmaster on YouTube in three days. I just couldn’t stop! I binge-watched my favourite videogame streamers and VTubers every single day, sometimes while cooking, cleaning or chatting with my friends back home at the same time. I also binge-watched a lot of YouTubers who use their channel to teach unique and natural Japanese expressions. Unlike “binge”‘s historically negative connotations, binge-watching can also be used positively, for informative and educational content.

How do you entertain yourself when you have to stay home? What TV shows do you like to binge-watch? Please tell me all about your favourite shows and YouTubers in your next English lesson 🙂

Septembre arrive deja, c’est bientot l’automne : le jour va devenir plus court, le froid va arriver, les arbres vont perdre leur feuille petit a petit… Quel magnifique saison ! J’adore l’automne

Le temps passe vite, vous ne trouvez ? Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de voir un feu d’artifice cette annee, je ne suis pas alle a la page, je n’ai pas voyage, pas de festival, pas de Yukata… Et pourtant c’est deja la fin de l’ete
Que fait-on au Japon pour l’automne?

En France l’automne est une saison parfaite pour la gastronomie !
Lasagnes aux champignons, Quiche aux poireaux et jambon, Crumble de potiron au parmesan, etc.

L’automne en France c’est la saison des champignons et des chataignes ! Il est tres normal de faire des promenade en foret le dimanche en famille pour ramasser des champignon et des chataignes pour ensuite les cuisiner et les manger

J’espere que nous passerons tous un agreable Automne !

In France, automn is a perfect season for the food !

In automn, in france, its the mushroom and the chataignes season ! Its really normal to go for a walk in a forest with your family on sunday and hunt for some mushroom to cook it and eat it

お寿司についてです！皆さんお寿司はお好きですか？
日本の国民食、お寿司がアメリカでどんな変貌を遂げているのか
Brendan先生が書いてくれたブログを見てみましょう！

In the US, sushi has been popular for a long time. It became popular in the 1960s in California, and it has become more and more popular over the years. For the most part, it is not so different from sushi in Japan. Raw fish is rolled up in rice and nori. Sometimes, different ingredients lead to new types of sushi that you won’t see in Japan.

One type of American sushi is the famous California roll. This was invented in California in the 1970s. No one knows who exactly created this roll, but it became popular very fast. The California roll is made with avacado, cucumber, and crab meat. Crab can be expensive sometimes, so fish that is changed to look like crab meat can be used. The name comes from the avacado. Most avacados in the US come from California, and the type of avacado used was developed in California.

Beyond the California roll, many other sushi recipes have been developed. Some of them use ingredients you wouldn’t normally see in sushi. For example, the Manhattan roll had smoked salmon and mango! The Philadelphia roll has salmon and cream cheese! The ingredients available in the US have definitely influenced the types of sushi people like to eat.

The idea of sushi can be different as well. First of all, in the US, nigiri sushi is not so popular. If an American person sees nigiri, they might say “That’s not sushi!” Also, there are some different shapes of sushi. In some places, you can buy sushi shaped like a donut. In other places, you can get sushi shaped like pizza!

One final thing that is different is where you can buy sushi in the US.
Outside of big cities, there are not many sushi-only restaurants.
It is more common to find sushi at Chinese restaurants in small towns!
It is also common to see sushi at supermarkets these days, just like Japan.
If you see sushi at a convenience store or gas station in the US,
however, you should not buy it.
It will probably be low quality…

アメリカと日本の映画館の違いについて後編です！！
第二弾の今回はどんな違いを知れるのか読んでみましょう！

One small difference is the way that buying tickets and snacks works. In the US, you can use a machine to buy the tickets, or you can talk to the staff to buy them. In Japan, you usally buy the tickets at the machine only. In both countries, you can buy tickets online with a credit card, though.

In a lot of American movie theaters these days, you reserve a seat just like in Japan. However, the trend in American theaters is to have seats that can recline, or lean back! Some of them can even become flat! This makes the tickets a little more expensive, though. At some theaters, there is also a restaurant that will bring you your food during the movie, and there could even be a bar to get alcohol!

One last difference is the behavior of the audience. In most theaters, the audience should be quiet, unless there is a funny or scary scene happening. In the US, however, sometimes the crowd will get very excited, and clap or cheer when something exciting happens! This happens a lot at midnight showings, when a movie is released at midnight. Many people will camp in front of the theater to get in and get a good seat. However, sometimes people leave a big mess in the theater when the movie is over in the US. The whole floor might be covered in popcorn, and the staff might take a long time to clean it up. This happens a lot in kid’s movies.

Both coutries have great movies and great movie theaters. It is interesting to see the differences in cinema culture between the US and Japan. These days it may be tough to go to the movies, but let’s enjoy them when we can!

今回はAmerica出身のBrendan先生が
日本とアメリカの映画館の違いについて
語ってくれましたよ！
アメリカの海外ドラマや映画を見ていても
映画を見るシーン欲出てきますよね🤔
そしてなんと！今回は前編後編と二部構成で投稿致します！

Although going to the cinema is very similar in Japan and America, there are a few difference between them.

For starters, in my hometown on the East Coast of the US, we almost never say “cinema”. We ususally only use this word to describe the movies that come from a certain country; for example, “I love Japanese cinema” or “I’m into Indian cinema”. We almost never say “I’m going to the cinema” or “Let’s go to the cinema!”. It would be a little strange to say these things. Where I come from, we say “the movie theater” or even just “the movies”. When I worked at a cinema in the US, we always called it “the theater.”

The snacks at the movie theater are pretty similar between Japan and the US. Of course, there is still popcorn, soda, candy, and some hot foods. Popular hot foods in the US include hot dogs, pizza, chicken, and especially nachos. The main difference is the size of the food. In the US, you can buy huge buckets of popcorn. You can bring the bucket back to the counter and get more popcorn any time! There are more different flavors of popcorn in Japan, though. Usually, there isn’t any caramel or cheese flavor popcorn. The soda sizes are even more different. A large size soda in Japan is probably the same size as a regular in America! An extra large could be more than 1 liter, and at some theaters you can get more soda any time!
