Dubstep – Dubstep was a natural evolution of the UKG 2-step sound, but with a greater focus on the sound system culture roots that made jungle music so vital. Early dubstep took inspiration from sub-heavy dub reggae music over sparse, half-time beats at 140bpm. On a good sound system, the weight of the subs can have such a powerful physical effect on the human body that it often felt somewhat meditative. Dubstep is often unfairly associated with its subsequent mutations into a more international, brash festival EDM style of sound which has little in common with its original feel and motivation. At its roots, there’s nothing quite like it.
Notable artists: Digital Mystikz, Mala, Loefah, Goth-Trad (from Japan), Skream
Experimental UK Electronica – There’s also, this huge amount of incredible modern electronic music that’s more difficult to categorize, since they take influence from all of the genres mentioned above and more. These artists, for me, illustrate the strength of the UK’s multi-cultural society and the incredible creations that emerge from collaboration and celebration of multiple influences from all kinds of local and international music scenes.

My favorite thing about growing up in the UK, and the thing I’m probably most proud of as a British person, is the huge range of amazing music made by British people. A lot of attention has been given to the great rock and pop musicians like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Oasis and so on, but I’ve never really been into those styles of music so much. For me, the UK’s most creative, influential and powerful art has come from musicians within the broad field of electronic music – specifically dance music, or club music.
Today I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite genres that emerged from the UK from the late 1980s onwards, what these words mean, and a couple of notable examples from each.
Ready? Let’s go!

Jungle – Jungle was a style of music emerging from sound system culture in the early 1990s. It is driven by fast breakbeats anywhere between 160-180bpm, usually sampled from old funk and jazz records, deep sub bass and heady memories influenced by dub reggae, jazz and hip hop. Experimentation within this genre eventually lead to modern Drum and Bass (DNB) music.
Notable artists: Roni Size, Goldie, Source Direct, Shy FX
UK Garage (UKG) – In the late 90s and early 2000s many DJs were slowing down jungle’s breakbeats to slower tempos between 125-140bpm in order to mix them with house music from Chicago and New Jersey. It slowly became its own thing, driven by 2-step rhythms, deep bass and re-pitched RnB vocals. It soon become a popular style for MCs to work with also.
Notable artists: Todd Edwards, DJ Luck & MC Neat, MJ Cole, So Solid Crew
Grime – Grime is arguably some of the most crucial music to ever emerge from the UK. It became a platform for young black artists in London to express themselves artisically, and vocalize their emotions and opinions in a visceral way that previously wasn’t reaching a mainstream audience. It remains forever relevant and in my opinion the most exciting, sonically experimental and innovative music to ever emerge from the UK.
Notable artists: Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, Ruff Sqwad

Hi everyone! Emily here!
With a heavy but hopeful heart, I’m writing to you now to say my goodbyes!

During these past few months with NOVA, I got to connect with students from all over Japan–and sometimes even students living abroad–via the remote learning that NOVA offers, and I also became so close with many students. My experiences at NOVA taught me so many valuable lessons about connecting with each of you and your language learning goals, but I’ve also learned a lot about myself as well, so I feel very blessed that I was able to learn and grow alongside so many kind and wonderful students! I will never forget the precious time I got to spend with each of you, and I will always be grateful for the friendships I was able to form with my fellow teachers and NOVA staff!

I am sad to bid you all goodbye, but another very important lesson I learned while working here is that in order for me to be happy and healthy, I have to follow my heart! This was my first time working a full-time job outside the music industry. Music has always been my passion and a driving force in my life, and while I enjoyed all the experience I gained at NOVA and felt so good about helping students along in their language learning journey, I now have an intimate understanding of just how important music is to me. I need it like I need oxygen! My purpose in life is and always has been to make music, and I know that the way I can best contribute to society is by staying true to myself, chasing my dreams, and following my calling to create and perform here in Tokyo! As such, while I will no longer be your NOVA instructor, I hope that our hearts might connect again in the future through my music! I hope my songs find you and bring a smile to your face when you need it most!

Visiting Seattle

Greetings everyone! I’d like to share with you some information about my hometown of Seattle. Seattle is one of the best places to visit in America, so if you are interested in going there after reading this article I hope you have the chance visit someday.

First of all, Seattle is located in the Northwest area of America, about 3 hours by car to the Canadian border. Although it is located in the very north corner, it is much warmer than say New York in the east corner. Therefore, you can be comfortable in any season. The winter is particularly rainy, however, so other season may offer a better time for outdoor activities.

Seattle is conveniently located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, with the Rocky Mountains bordering on the east side. Therefore, it is a wonderful place to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, boating, camping, fishing, and in the winter, skiing and snowboarding.

If outdoor sports aren’t your cup of tea, then there are plenty of other interesting spots to check out. Among the most popular are several types of tours which you can take. Since Seattle is on the ocean coast, there are many boat tours which you can view the many small islands around the bay, mountain ranges, and even the many whales that swim in the area. The seaside area of Seattle also has many museums and shopping areas which are quite popular. In the downtown area, you can visit the Space Needle, which is a tower similar to Tokyo Tower in that you can ride to the top in an elevator and get a spectacular view of the city. Near the Space Needle is a very unique interactive music museum that people of all ages can enjoy.

Other points of interest in Seattle are the Seattle Mariners baseball team, the Boeing aircraft factory (which includes a history of flight museum), the many large casinos, outlet shopping malls, and tours of the Microsoft head office which is located on the east side of Seattle.

Whatever your interests are, I am sure you can find something worthwhile in Seattle!

講師に紹介していただきますよ！

 

3週目　夏にまつわる単語を使ったフレーズについて　　

“It’s no sweat.”　→　汗をかかない？？
“Soak Up Some Sun.”　→　太陽を吸収する？？
皆さんはこれらのフレーズが
どういった意味なのか知っていますか？
直訳ではない、夏に関する単語を使った
イディオム表現を学びましょう。
これを知っていれば、
よりネイティブらしい英語になるかも！

 

4週目　スペインの夏について　　

4週目の多言語とのコラボレッスン、
今月はスペイン出身の女性講師Susana先生が
ゲストとして登場！
スペインの夏のお祭りといえば？
夏の名物といえば？？
1～3週目までに習った英語表現も使いながら、
スペインの夏を紹介していきます。
