今回は、似ているようで微妙にニュアンスの違う英語をご紹介します❕
ニュアンスをマスターして、英会話の達人に近づきましょう🎶

🔴日焼けは「sunburn」か「suntan」か❓
sunburnからネイティブが連想するのは、長く日に当たりすぎて肌が赤くなり
痛みを持つような日焼けです。
例えばI got sunburn at the beach.→「ビーチで日焼けした」のように使います。
suntanは肌が茶色くなる程度日焼けのことを指し、She has a sun tan because
she plays a lot of sports.「彼女はたくさんのスポーツをするので日焼けしている」
のように使います。

🔴「～させる」はmake❓let❓
makeとletはいずれも使役動詞として「（人に）～させる」
という意味を持ちますが、そのニュアンスは異なります。
makeはI make my kids eat all their vegetables.
「子供に野菜を全部食べさせる」のように、
（人が）できればしたくないと思うことを強制的にさせる場合に使います。
letはlet my kids eat ice cream after dinner.
「夕食後、子供にアイスクリームを食べさせた」というように
「（人の）望み通りにさせてあげる」というニュアンスがあります。

🔴「最初に」はat first❓first❓
at firstはだんだん変化をしていく物事に対して使う表現で
At first, swimming was really difficult but it soon became easier.
「初めは難しかったが、すぐに難なく泳げるようになった」のように使います。
firstは、いくつかある物事の「始まり」を意味し、例えば電車の乗り換え案内で
first, take the Shizuoka line.Then change to the Shizutetsu line.
「最初は静岡線に乗り、それから静鉄線に乗り換えてください」のように
使います✨

どうでしたか❓
普段何気なく使っている英語でも実はニュアンスが違い
会話の相手からの受け取り方も大きく違ってきます(。-`ω-)

今回は、日本とはちょっと違うアメリカのクリスマスの過ごし方を
アメリカ出身のChris先生が教えてくれました🎅

Hello! I’m Christopher!

I want to tall you about Christmas in USA.
As many would already know, Christmas is not a native holiday to Japan. Brought to Japan from overseas, Christmas evolved into a day for spreading happiness – a day for parties, presents, and romantic dates. And although Christmas in America shares many of these aspects, it also has its own unique traditions.

In Japan, Christmas is generally seen as a day for immediate family or couples. However, in America, Christmas is usually spent with extended family and relatives. And if the family is religious, it also isn’t uncommon for them to go to church together to attend service, pray, and sing Christmas carols.

Food is another major difference. When one thinks of “Christmas food” in Japan, often Christmas cake and KFC come to mind. However, in America, the traditional Christmas meal for many consists of either ham or some sort of bird (duck, goose, turkey, etc.) plus any additional regional dishes.

The Christmas tree is another important item for Americans. Although many families now opt for a plastic tree to decorate with ornaments, it also isn’t uncommon for many families to instead put up a genuine fir tree.
And just like in Japan, cities will often decorate the streets with lights and trees to celebrate Christmas. However, it also isn’t unusual to see Americans decorate the outside of their own homes; some people even turn their own neighborhood into huge lightshow!

Lastly, the legend of Santa Claus is an important story many young American children grow up with. At midnight of Christmas day, Santa comes down through the chimney bringing presents to the children who were good throughout the year, and coal to the ones who were bad. Afterwards, he returns to the North Pole to prepare for the next year.
While there are differences in Japanese and American Christmas traditions, both countries undoubtedly share the true meaning of Christmas – peace on earth, goodwill to all, and thankfulness for what one’s family and friends.

今回は🌸春留学特別編第２弾🌸としてVancouverの
魅力をVancouver出身のDicky先生に聞いてみました👨✨

My favorite spots in Vancouver are a bit far from the big city. First stop we’re going to is Stanley Park! Stanley Park is home to many historical items such as totem poles. It’s wonderful spot to enjoy a nice picnic on a sunny day. Once you’re finished enjoying nature, you can also go to the Vancouver Aquarium! My favorite sea animal is the beluga whale. It’s so cool!
Beware at night, though. It’s said that Stanley Park is haunted. If you’re feeling brave, try to take a picture!

Another popular spot is Grouse Mountain. Located in Vancouver, it’s a fun spot year round. In the winter, it’s a ski resort really nearby. You can spend the day skiing or snowboard! The rest of the year, there’s a nice hiking trail, called the Grouse Grind. Nicknamed Nature’s StairMaster, you can find yourself hiking up the side of the mountain to reach the top. Regardless of season, the view of downtown Vancouver from the top is wonderful, especially at night! Give it a try!

突然ですが、「アルバイト」を英語で言えますか❓❓
アルバイトが英語だと思っていた方も多いのではないでしょうか❓
実はこれも日本人が作った和製英語なんです😨

そこで今日は、ネイティブには通じない和製英語をご紹介します❕

和製英語①カンニング→cheating
「カンニング」とは「ずるい」「悪賢い」という意味なので
英語でカンニングすると使うことはできません。

和製英語②レントゲン→X-ray
X線写真を表す「レントゲン」は、X線を発見したドイツ人の物理学者
Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen（ヴィルヘルム・コンラート・レントゲン）に
由来しています。英語ではX-rayと言います。

和製英語③アルバイト→part time job
「アルバイト」はドイツ語から由来しています。
英語ではpart-time-jobなのでI have part-time-jobと
言うように使います。

今日はラグビー大好きなアイルランド出身の
Dara先生をご紹介します！

Hello, my name is Dara.

I’m a new teacher here at NOVA Shizuoka.
I also teach in Shimizu on Mondays and Tuesdays.I came from Ireland but I’ve all over the world! Japan is country number 5!
I was born in London, England but grew up Limerick, Ireland because my parents are Irish.

Limerick is famous for it’s history, city castle, rugby and music. It’s also the home of the two youngest billionaires in the world.
If you like music the most famous band from Limerick are the Cranberries! Give them a listen!
In Ireland I learned to speak English and Irish(Gaeilge) and in France I learned to speak French(Francaise)!

I moved to Paris, France when I was 24 and lived there for 3years!
I moved to France because I love food and rugby! That’s exactly why I have moved to Japan. I moved to Japan just one week before the start of the rugby World Cup and have very much enjoyed the atmosphere!
I have been trying to find a rugby team to play with you in Shizuoka so if you know any please let me know!
I also love hiking and that’s why I chose to live in Shizuoka as it’s really close to Mount Fuji.

If you want to stop and talk about rugby, hiking, traveling or have any Japanese food recommendations please let me know!So glad to have met so many of you so far and I’m always looking forward to meeting new students so don’t be shy!
I also love movies, music and books. My favorite types of movies and books are thrillers but I’m open to all types.
I also love singing, if you know any musician who would like an English speaking vocalist, let me know!

突然ですが、今日のOne Questionです❕
11月11日は何の日でしょうか❓❓
日本ではポッキーの日として盛り上がる11月11日ですが
実はカナダでは特別な意味を持つ１日なんです✨

今回はカナダ出身のDicky先生が11月11日の
特別な日について教えてくれました（●＾o＾●）

November 11 is a special day in Canada as well as many other Western Countries. On November 11, 1918 at the 11th hour, a bugle sound was heard, marking the end of the First World War. On this day every year, we have a memorial ceremony for all the lives that were lost from the war. “Lest we Forget”, meaning we should not forget.

Every school holds a special ceremony to honor. On the day itself, it is a public holiday and a special parade is held at each city center. Many local groups including cadets, emergency services, and public services participate in the parade.

One of the important symbols used during the ceremony is the poppy flower. Members of the public donate some money and receive a poppy. The poppy flower is laid onto a wreath, in remembrance of the those who fought.
